Sanford Dam remains standing but flooding impacts surrounding area on Wednesday, May 20, 2020. After the Edenville Dam failed and the Tittabawassee River flooded surrounding areas, many residents were urged to leave their homes and to brace themselves for the possibility of the Sanford Dam to collapsing. Water flowed over the top of it through the night, but the structure is still in place.

How did this happen? Stupid Environ"mental"ists and an even Stupider Michigan Governing "weak" body to listen to them. Save the non-indigenous Muscles "at all costs". realize that their excuse is a 500 year flood AS CAUSED BY a "100 year rain storm" that the dams "were capable of holding back". Engineers spoke truths that the government refused to comprehend: realize that an entire "chemical plant" was washed away and dumped into the Great Lakes via our "arrogant" and all knowing Government! The results are in the now poisoned and ruined "Great Lakes".

Water both sides of the dam with a big gap in the dam? Also some videos show water passing under the solid structures of the dam, thus they are not safe either. Moral of story: dam is broke not “standing”

What are the odds that 2 earthen dams in the same state fail within hours of each other during a nationwide pandemic shutdown?! Particularly with a totalitarian governor battling opposing citizens uprising.

Pretty high when the upstream dam fails and dumps all its water downstream where it ends up behind the second dam which quickly overtops and fails. But you don't seem to be very reality based so not sure a rational explanation will satisfy you.

Looks like debris stopped up the dam doors and then the emergency spill way failed when they were topped over with the water. How could this happen? We have known since the 1950s that any earthen spill way will fail if over topped. We have had 70 years to fix this design fault.

Hi, I"ve seen a couple of your vids here and appreciate your knowledge of dams. Question. They still seem concerned in Midland, that this damn "may not hold" and cause water to rise further, but from what I'm looking at it doesn't seem the dam is having any impact right now on holding water. Is that true? Or do they have some reason to worry down stream?

Great drone footage - the first 12 seconds or so speaks volumes for what is left of the dam. And it shows there is still plenty of water yet to go downstream. Spent many hours on both of those lakes growing up fishing and boating. And yes, there's been a flood or two since the 70's, never quite this bad though. Will they rebuild? Who knows at this point? If they do, it would probably be a complete rebuild, and not just a patch job. Sad thing is they were scheduled to be worked on in the next two years or so; preliminary engineering and design was supposed to be complete this month. I however would expect them to be rebuilt; there's a lot of money that flows around those lakes in terms of residents, sportsmen, and tourists. But that's a discussion for later. For now, it's help the folks displaced by and those who have lost their homes due the flood waters. People are what counts most.

Umm.... No. It's very clear from the video that most of the dam is now gone. Not under the floodwaters, gone. That little bit of grass covered earthen embankment by the power house and sluice gates? That's all that remains of the dam. This was an earth embankment dam, only the power house and sluices were concrete.

I'm no expert on dams but it would seem like this one has lost its ability to hold back water. By "structure still in place" are you implying that it is capable of doing something other than occupying space? All I see is the spillway collecting debris and water levels equalized on both sides due to GIANT missing section of berm.

Cedar Cam Hi, I live in this area and that’s just how my officials are, they like to say things are still capable when they aren’t. Most residents here will tell you they knew it was only a matter of time before the dams failed, 6 hours before the whole mess we were told the dams were structurally safe. This is just there way to make everything seem less worrisome then it really is

@Sgt Brendan I thought I read Boyce was ordeted to keep it high because people wanted that height, too much attention to aquatic life, and protecting mussels; meanwhile, not enough overflow ability and degrading spillway structure (which I do not see the videos that were originally being broadcast).

Ай мурун
Calvin Smith

Michael Hill I don’t think that’s as much a foregone conclusion as you’re making it out to be. A state of emergency doesn’t automatically mean we’re gonna rebuild it as fast as possible. There is no plan yet on whether or not they will be rebuilt. All we can do is wait and see. This is an opportunity to restore a natural ecosystem that’s been damaged for almost a hundred years. I think the state or the private company that owns it would be foolish to unilaterally declare they will rebuild without any debate.

Ай мурун
Michael Hill
Michael Hill

@Just busting your balls you're right but the state will pay for it. Because high property values equals high property taxes. Just like the coronavirus...they deemed liquor stores essential. Because we all know the state needs their liquor tax.

Feasibility studies will have to be carried out before any rebuilding commences. Suprised if they rebuild especially there are other unsafe dams that need repair. Should focus on other problem dams in state.

There is a common misunderstanding regarding the word "dam." The entire earthen barrier that keeps the water back is the dam. The concrete structure that regulates the water flow is the spillway. The spillway is part of the dam. Photos show that the spillways for the Edenville and Sanford dams are mostly intact. The photos show that the earthen barriers have given way, no doubt about that. Thus, the dams have failed.

@J. Han ...When the water level gets low enough they'll find out the extent of the damage but by the looks of it right now I'd say it's going to 1. be completely rebuilt from the base or 2. not rebuild at all and let the river flow naturally. I feel sorry for the people living there that have been effected. I live with a earthen dam not too far from here and if it were to fail totally my home and town would be under water by around 24 ft! February 1st the emergency spillway went into use and served it's purpose...a rare event as it's only the 6th time since 1964. The river flooded and was around 7ft or more above normal level but stayed pretty much contained. I wonder how much if any of this has to do with global warming.

Ай мурун
Runnn
Runnn

Just overtopped is BS. By the pics you can tell that part of the earthen dam is gone. Look at the grassy area of the dam that looks partially exposed dirt and grass that is jagged as that’s where the dam has been torn away, I.e., collapsed. Once an earthen dam gets overrun then it comes apart, hence the term collapsed, because it is only made of sand, dirt, grass at the top and often rock on the water side. The earthen dam is not concrete or steel so it can’t hold together once overwhelmed.

Very tragic & sad indeed! I dearly hope no one was hurt. That being said, I can't help but think of those who refuse to listen to atmospheric experts, who have been telling us for years, to expect more moisture/rain in the coming years, due to global warming. Most of our current infrastructure can't handle what is happening (flooding) everywhere Guess what folks....this water isn't going away..

Some are bound to fade out. Others are VERY well to do. The reason I mentioned the tree cores is that you will see we are always having global changes, certainly you have heard of the "Little Ice Age" ? Sigh, the glaciers are fine people often lie their asses off to get grants and what makes grants keep coming? Morons that believe their findings with out checking it them selves. Ай мурун
stuf2201
stuf2201

The dam was taken over by four county governments. I'd imagine there was intense political pressure to keep the turbines on if possible. It's also possible the local grid/dow chemical plant couldn't operate without the turbines. All flood control and hydro power should be owned by the federal government like the TVA. Once you have to actually maintain them, they cease being profitable.
