Check out www.CuriosityStream.com/startalk and use code "startalk" to get your first 31 days free!
On this episode of StarTalk Radio, your personal astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is back alongside comic co-host Chuck Nice to answer fan-submitted questions on a variety of topics that take us across the universe and into the unknown. You’ll find out why the universe will ultimately die “not with a bang, but with a whimper. And not in fire, but in ice.” Explore the relationship between time and space as we ponder the fabric of spacetime. You’ll even hear about the possibilities of a universe inside of another universe.
Discover more about the concept of the holographic universe. We investigate electron microscopes and why they let us see more than light-based microscopes. You’ll also learn why matter is waves and particles. You’ll find out more about moving around in zero gravity and how you could propel a wheelchair while floating in space.
Explore Hawking radiation. You’ll learn more about gravitational redshifts. We calculate the impact of merging black holes. We also discuss time dilation: do electromagnetic signals get warped by time dilation? Neil explains the Fermi paradox and “The Great Filter.” We ponder if the urge to explore the universe is the same urge that might destroy us.
We try and work out a design that would make solar panels and lasers work together for wireless energy transfer. Get details why the future imagined by the 1950s-60s has been reshaped by the accessibility of information. All that, plus, Neil advocates for common core math and the importance of asking the right questions.
This episode originally aired on March 1, 2019.

Is it possible that each dimension is an actual universe? Like if in each universe the laws of physics are different, and there are possibly an infinite number of universes, and then there is the way people explain dimensions, there should in essence be an infinite number of dimensions/universes. Idk.

The idea that something can come from nothing is absurd and is only a political answer. What do you think the chances that a book would spontaneously appear in front of you? The bottom line, creation has a creator. I still love Neil and will continue to watch all of his content! He is brilliant!

30:00 min in you say that someone without leg mobility could work normally on a space station but astronauts use their feet on mentioned hand bars to keep themself in place whilst doing "space work" so how would a paraplegic keep themselves steady or to prevent floating away while working?

More massive objects have more gravity, and increased gravity increases the speed at which time goes by. If all particles contain information, is time possibly part of the information contained in particles?

Im fairly confident that bit on the rocket wheelchair had an inaccuracy. Neil said that the rockets on the wheels would cause the wheels to spin, but would cause the chair to spin in the opposite direction which doesnt make sense (to me). Asumining the wheels have bushings or sealed/shielded bearings, the friction would cause the chair to spin in the same direction of the wheels just much much slower. The actual speed would be determined by some ratio of the wheel speed and angular momentum compared to the angular momentum of the chair. I probably missed something, i haven't physicsed in a while.

30:00 Every astronaut is launched into space with 40 to 80 pounds of worthless equipment, called "legs." As an amputee, I have to wonder, why not send amputees to space. Amputees have a lower launch cost and they are in a place where a lack of legs doesn't hamper you.

2 ай мурун
Eric Taylor
Eric Taylor

@James Ross I did not say legs were useless in space. I said they are not needed in space. Astrologists currently use their legs because that is what the infrastructure is designed to use. All you need is a *SLIGHT* change in that equipment to use stumps instead. Any loss of convenience is more than made up for in not having to lift unnecessary equipment into space. Legs are worthless in space because the same job legs do can be accomplished with much cheaper to launch stumps.

Ай мурун

They use their feet a lot. Using foot loops to hold themselves in place freeing up their hands for use. They wouldn't get a thing done without worthless legs if they had to use their hands for stabilization.

Unpopular opinion: Chuck nice is actually quite intelligent. He sometimes even downplays it on purpose. In one of their last videos (corona zoom call with a smart quantum lady) he even got one of the points (that when two people are lookung at their quantum entangled particle they only know that it now has a state, but they do not know who looked at it first) before Neil did but then acted surprised and amazed when Neil finally got it... what i'm saying is: make chuck nice the expert and make Neil deBlack Google ask the questions.

so in the theory of relativity, where time is the fourth dimension, and assuming that time slows the closer to luminal speeds you travel, would it be a reasonable assumption that time expands at the speed of light? would that mean time acts as a wavelength over a particle?

Problem with common core math is the lower levels. I looked at my 5th grade math book and I looked at my sister's and I couldn't find the content in her book in my book because it was in my 4th grade book. Also, they dumb everything down using pretty pictures.
