The reconstructed Oroville Dam spillway was used on Tuesday, April 2, 2019
for the first time since the spillway split open in February 2017.
Water first went down the spillway shortly before 11 a.m
Department of Water Resources planned for releases

I am thinking, that's a LOT of electricity going down the drain! Build in some hydroelectric turbines and generate some electricity from the "spillage" it would pay for itself quickly.

The owners of the dams submitted applications to the pointy headed liberal DEMOCRAT bureaucrats of Michigan to repair the dams as indicated in recent inspection reports. The pointy headed liberal DEMOCRAT bureaucrats of Michigan declined the applications on the basis that mussels in the lake would be harmed. It must be real nice living in deep, blue liberal DEMOCRAT Michigan where the DEMOCRAT bureaucrats seek to protect mussels but not human beings.

Why aren't they power turbines in the walls or middle? They could capture lost energy from the rush of water I would think.

2 ай мурун
GHill
GHill

The regular turbines are likely already running full speed, or, there is too much power in the grid for the demand needed such that running the turbines would require the state to sell off it's excess power at very low or negative prices. As with any machine you want to be efficient with it's use because they require maintenance and replacement with use, but you also want an asset to be used to generate revenue and stay in top form. Spillways in power generating dams are used infrequently enough and at times when power generation capacity is already very high that running turbines in the spillways is costly, inefficient and not useful.

Anyone that wants to know the whole story, the true story, only needs to look up blancolirio on YouTube and go back to his videos in the very beginning of this incident. He is a pilot for American Airlines, lives near there, and started doing vlogs at the dam on his days off. He is not into weaving fairytales, but his Mom was a small town reporter and he grew up with curiosity about the World. So he continued making trips to the dam to record the massive re-construction effort and they quickly let him get official access. Again, look up his channel and you can go through it all. Anyway, the happy ending is that there were NO mistakes made in the re-construction. There are no leaks, no green spots on the face of the dam that are part of some conspiracy theory. No corners were cut and it was a Masterful effort by the engineers, contractors and workers, to get the job done on time (yes, that took a LOT of money). Juan Browne got such a following on his blancolirio channel that he started covering other subjects as a 'part time' hobby and the people were fascinated by his honest, thought-out assessments of the work. He flew the big jets for a living. Unfortunately, what he is reporting on now is that the airlines are quite possibly going to disappear for awhile, folks.

3 ай мурун
Harrick V Harrick
Harrick V Harrick

@Kat Cammarata In 2019 the rebuilt spillway was opened (or, delivered, put into service) and that is what we see in the video - the year the old one that broke down was in '17. Also, that one failed when it was used in high capacity FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME IN ALL DECADES IT ALREADY HAD EXISTED. There had never been a situation where such amounts of water had to be dropped before, as actually the lake begins the dam is created to KEEP HOLD of as much water as it can, so that that can be used and supplied later in the year when the seasons are much more dry and there is a demand for that water instead of to large an abundance. The reason the old spillway failed had to do with the tremendous weight and pull the occur when that downward slope is filled with a lot of water whilst it is running through it - probably hundreds of millions of gallons - if you'd put the amount in liters it would represent an equal amount of weight in kilograms.

do we know WHATS the cause of the original problem? Looks like its the same design as the previous.....

6 ай мурун
Jeffrey Hill
Jeffrey Hill

There is a published study about what went wrong. Basically, the dam was built to really high standards back in the 60's, and NOTHING went wrong for more than 40 years. California did not do their job and do the right inspections and maintenance work over that 40 year period. The spillway doesn't get used very often, but that particular year, they had way too much water coming into the reservoir, ran the spillway at a high volume (necessary) and some previously undiscovered cracks went berserk. Like somebody else said, 'cavitation'. Yes the new design is basically the same. It is nearly one MILE long and they rebuilt the entire thing. And this time they anchored the damn thing deep into the bedrock and put digital sensors all over it and all the modern engineering. Fantastic job of a little "quick fix" to the tune of $1.1 Billion.

I was a river engineer and ask the question .Why put a bump in the overflow a third of the way down the skid? This is a very stupid design, as the water coming down that concrete channel will cause extreme cavitational vortex.Which will lead to enormous stressses on the bed of concrete spillway. You can quite clearly see this in action when the water speed reaching a constant flow. This dam is going to FAIL if maximum load is imposed on it, The cavitation all forces WILL cause enormous stresses. vibration not only on the deck but the sidewalls too. I would like to see the run off at 75% capacity through this dam. The bump in the spillway is going to be it's failure. MARK MY WORDS. The people below this dam should be considering moving. This dam is a ticking timebomb for total destruction.

7 ай мурун
Harrick V Harrick
Harrick V Harrick

No, there is so much more to consider regarding this design, and you don't touch on ANY of it, I don't believe you are anything in terms of engineering or you would have started with thinking of the why's and the what for's before posting such a unfounded load of criticism. Instead you haven't thought it through at all.
