StarTalk Podcast: Cosmic Queries - The Deep Part II

    узактыгы: 40:32

On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are back exploring the depths of the cosmos in a follow-up to Cosmic Queries - The Deep. In this second part, we get even deeper and go even further into the mysteries of the universe.
We start with the age-old question: which came first, the chicken or the egg? Neil gives us the definitive answer. But then we expand the question even further. Which came first: space itself or the Big Bang? This inspires Chuck to come up with a word to describe “something that is nothing”. You’ll hear about the history of the multiverse theory. Neil tells us why Einstein’s general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics don’t “get along”.
We explore the rules of quantum mechanics. Find out if light itself can get spaghettified at the event horizon of a black hole. We discuss a simulation universe. And, if we are in a simulation universe, how would you explain the weather? Discover why everything in the universe is sphere-shaped and curvy. We ponder if the Big Bang created life itself. Neil explains why we shouldn’t look for life near stars and on planets that were around towards the beginning of the universe.
We discuss dark matter. Neil gives us his thoughts on why it should be renamed to dark gravity. You’ll also hear why dark matter is still the longest unsolved mystery in modern astrophysics. We explore the nature of sunlight and how it travels to the Earth, the Moon, and how it interacts with both. All that, plus, find out why time stops at the speed of light.

Space is often visualized as if its a blanket, and when you put an object on it the blanket curves. Thats assuming its a 2d surface, but as we know its not 2d, so what would it actually look like

When we say the term Psuedo Force(not an actual force) we apply that to Non Inertial frames while looking at it, what if dark matter is just like another pseudo force and we need to look at it from another frame of reference or even maybe a higher dimensional frame? Also, big fan of the show. :)

Hold up.If you believe in the multiverse theory. So if you stand on a bridge and think should i jump or not.And you decide not to jump.Is another universe created where you jumped.Or a universe dissapeared cuz you jumped and died????And if another is created when you jump, what happens to it when you die in there

I like how Neil broke down the multiverse. Cuz the way it was always explained bugged me with it's implications. Like he said it doesn't facilitate a person's immortality. We have no reason to think universes are created as a result of our personal thoughts, choices, & decisions. As I understand, there's no indication that particles (or particle-sized universes) come into existence for any observable reason at all... Is that right? 🤔... Now I'm thinking about how observation does have an effect on things like half-life decay. 😆 Maybe consciousness *does* have a quantum force. 😂 jk jk 🤣

What if, the edge of our Known universe, has rebounded and is now returning back to its point of explosion, and "the gap" measured at the edge, including its expansion; is actually perceiving that it is expanding and as of now expanding faster, but fasley starting its collapse? Just like a really big super duper nova, to also repeat the big bang.

Could a black hole interact with space not as a well but more of a hour glass shape. And using a similar idea as wormholes going from one point in the universe to another. Resulting in a push somewhere else in the universe. That was a result of an excess gravity. Perhaps through a fourth dimensional interaction or a quantum interaction?

At 1st i just didnt like chuck, but he grew on me, but i still dont think this is the place for him. Its just super distracting and i feel like Neil would cover soooo much more ground... nk offense Chuck. Not tryna get u out a job, just maybe alternate co hosts a bit more

3:00 Regarding the chicken and egg statement, what develops first inside the chicken's mother? The egg, or the chicken embryo? If the chicken embryo is develops before the egg forms around it, then the chicken comes before the egg. I agree with Neil, but I've always had that further question (which I can't be bothered to google).

I often wonder if there is a possibility that the gravitational effects of virtual particles in intergalactic space might contribute to what we observe dark matter/energy: I'd be interested to know: if in the incredible vacuum of intergalactic space, if reduced destructive interference from neighboring particles to the virtual particles would affect the probability amplitude for virtual particles at all. Of course, this is half related to the 'worst prediction in the history of physics' so...

My deep question. When a photon passes a massive object from a distant point of view it takes a curved path because gravity warps the space-time around the object. OK I get that. What about from the photons frame of reference. If an observer was riding piggyback on the photon would it still seem to be following a straight path.?
